NEPAD rallies support for Nigeria’s renewable energy policy

Speaking during the Energy for All national workshop in Abuja, the acting Chief Executive Officer of New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), Gregory Iyogun has urged the federal government to maintain a national action plan for renewable and sustainable energy.

He disclosed that NEPAD alongside principal players such as ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), and various ministries, including power, environment, science and technology as well as consultants, were working towards producing a corporate world class document that would serve as a road map to delivering on the energy for all policy.

Iyogun noted that with the actors in place, the country would no doubt develop a workable policy that would provide a solid foundation upon which economic development could be built.

The lead Consultant, Prof Ken Ife had lamented that only 40 percent of the total population of about 160 million Nigerians have access to any form of energy in the country. He said; “We are trying to have a corporate world class unified national document, that goes out to the world that this is Nigeria and this is our programme on how we see ourselves complying and delivering on the energy for all policy”.

“The chronic shortage of power in Nigeria has gone beyond story, we are driving this programme by driving the action to the private sector let people see how they can invest in power” he added.
