Ghana: Sankofa gas project begins construction

In West Africa, earlier this week, Ghana’s president, John Mahama, cut the sod enabling work to begin on the Sankofa gas project at Sanzule, Ellembelle District.

The Sankofa gas project comprises of the onshore gas reception facility ENI integrated Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) project. The gas project is reported to have a capacity of producing 180 million standard cubic feet per day (mscf/d), enough to generate about 1,000MW of power, and oil production of about 45,000 barrels per day.

According to Ghana Web, the onshore facility will consists of installations including the compressor station, helipad and accommodation units to allow easy management and transmission of the gas after it has been connected to the 111km gas pipelines operated by Ghana Gas.

Meanwhile, the offshore facility will constitute the construction of FPSO and mooring, subsea installation, extension of flow lines to the shore, which are reportedly being worked on locally and in Singapore.

Mahama highlighted that the $700 million project, represents a true transformational investment and a positive impact on the country’s economy as the host, as well as to the neighbouring communities.

ENI Ghana to train locals

Managing director of the lead operators at ENI Ghana, Fabio Cavanna, stated that the firm in planning to upskill Ghanaians for this project.

“We at Eni Ghana have developed a long-term recruitment and training plan dedicated to local resources. Large selection sessions have been held in 2014 and 2015 in collaboration with the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology,” Cavanna said.

He also added that the company has earmarked $300 million to spend on procurement from local firms, of which according to the media the corporation has already spent $1.5 billion on local content.
