The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has given eight new companies with a combined capacity to generate 1,648.25 megawatts (MW) of electricity, operational licenses to begin developing their respective projects.
In a statement signed by its head of public affairs, Dr. Usman Arabi, NERC noted that one of the licensees, Ossiomo Power and Infrastructure which is based in Edo State would engage in electricity distribution as well as embedded generation of 55MW of gas-powered electricity.
While Anambra State Independent Power Generation Company Limited which is located in Onitsha and expected to operate as an on-grid gas-fired plant would generate with its license, 528MW of electricity.
Others according to the statement are Cummins Power Generation with a capacity for a 3.5MW off-grid capacity plant and a 1.7MW plant to serve A&P Foods in Agege, Lagos; Sinosun Investment Limited which is based in Jibiya, Kastina State for an on-grid solar power plant of 100MW capacity and LR-Aaron Power Limited, located in Gwagalada for a 100MW solar powered electricity generation plant.
Also licensed by NERC was Lafarge Africa Plc for an on-grid gas-fired 260MW plant in Ewekoro, Ogun State; Azikel Power Limited for an on-grid 500MW power plant located in Obunagha in Bayelsa State and Middle Band Solar One Limited from Kogi State for an on-grid licence of 100MW.
