The Namibian national power utility, NamPower signed agreements with KfW Development Bank in Windhoek early November for a financing Programme on Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency with a financial volume of EUR 25.0 million, which translates into NAD 377.2 million.
Under this Programme, German Financial Cooperation through KfW will support NamPower to increase the capacity of the existing three runners at Ruacana hydro power plant by 15 MW to ensure a stable and reliable power supply in the short- and medium-term.
Furthermore, the project foresees the construction of a 400 kV transmission line between Gerus and Otjikoto over a distance of 170 km thereby closing the backbone loop in the Northern part of Namibia. A third component of the programme is the upgrade of existing transmission lines between Kuiseb and Walvis Bay and Khan and Lithops.
At the signing ceremony, KfW Director Namibia, Dr. Uwe Stoll emphasized that "Energy is an enabler for economic growth and KfW has considerable experience in promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. Hence, more projects shall be jointly implemented in the future."
NamPower Acting CEO, Mr. Simson Haulofu commended on the long-standing and trustful cooperation between the two entities which saw the financing and implementation of the 4th turbine at the Ruacana water plant and the co-financing of the Caprivi link in the recent past.
