Power Demand in Kenya Reaches New Record Levels of 2,411.98MW with the Help of Renewable Energy

A peak demand of 2,411.98MW and the highest-ever daily energy consumption of 44,122.60MWh recorded, Kenya's desire for electricity has reached a new high.

The milestone represents a pivotal point in Kenya's energy history, highlighting rising home and industrial demand, which is primarily fueled by dependable and clean renewable energy from KenGen.

Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) continues to be the cornerstone of Kenya's green power, contributing the majority of the nation's energy mix through geothermal and hydropower generation, which together accounted for over 53% of all electricity generated, according to the most recent reports from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

KenGen's hydropower plants produced 9,871MWh, 3.23% above target, and its geothermal stations produced 12,787MWh, exceeding dispatch projections by 5.07%. Together, these renewable energy sources powered Kenya's growth and ensured system stability even during times of fluctuating wind and solar output.

KenGen Managing Director and CEO, Eng. Peter Njenga, stated that the company's renewable portfolio currently surpasses 1,605MW in installed capacity. "KenGen's consistent renewable generation continues to anchor Kenya's grid reliability and reduce reliance on expensive thermal power, aligning with national climate goals."

The research also reveals that solar production decreased by 21.5%, reflecting seasonal fluctuations, while wind generation increased by 15.45% as a result of better night performance. Thermal plants briefly covered 11% of total generation, slightly above target, to balance supply, underscoring the significance of preserving a varied and adaptable energy mix.

Kenya's strong system management and investment in renewable capacity, led by KenGen and backed by other industry partners, are evident in the fact that no load shedding was observed throughout the country's grid during the record-breaking demand period.

As part of the ongoing G2G 2034 strategy, KenGen is optimizing its current assets and advancing its green energy expansion strategy, which has led to the achievement of a new high. These initiatives complement the government's industrialization plan and align with Kenya's goal of obtaining 100% clean energy.

Kenya's economic recovery and the effectiveness of our long-term investments in sustainable generation are strongly shown by this increase in power consumption, according to Engineer Njenga. The record demand highlights the growing significance of sustainable baseload power, which guarantees affordability, dependability, and resilience in Kenya's power supply, as the country moves closer to universal access to electricity.
