The construction of Kenya's first nuclear power plant is progressing, with political support from President William Ruto, Opposition Leader Raila Odinga, and the Council of Governors for the project. As stated by Opiyo Wandayi, Secretary of the Energy and Petroleum Cabinet, the project is in progress.
"Kenya is considering operating a nuclear power plant for the first time. Every safety and environmental concern is being addressed in strict accordance with IAEA guidelines," Opiyo Wandayi said.
Kenya's energy security program, including a Sh15 billion partnership with the World Bank for off-grid energy, aligns with the planned nuclear project in Siaya County. Led by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Cooperation, the off-grid initiative aims to electrify 14 underprivileged counties.
The country also intends to privatize the Kenya Pipeline Company in an effort to harness the potential of its 1,342-kilometer fuel distribution network and draw in private investment.
