The Zanzibar government is interested to produce dependable power to support the island's numerous developing projects, growing tourism industry, and other investment projects.
At the State House, Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Mwinyi informed the European Union (EU) commission that in order to maintain seamless operations in a variety of sectors, the growth of social and economic activities requires more electricity generation.
The European External Action Service's Director-General for Africa, Ms. Rita Laraujinha, served as the commission's leader. According to President Mwinyi, Zanzibar has been receiving 100MW of energy from the Tanzanian mainland via undersea cables for a long time, but this is currently insufficient.
President Mwinyi has stated that alternative energy sources are necessary for the smooth operation of the island's numerous commercial and social endeavors. Zanzibar is thinking of using wind, wave, or solar energy to produce more electricity.
Dr. Mwinyi encouraged the European Union to look into helping Zanzibar in the region. Furthermore, he stated that, his government is taking waste-to-energy projects into consideration as a potential substitute for electricity.
In reference to investment matters, Dr. Mwinyi asked EU nations, in particular the business sector, to investigate investment prospects in Zanzibar because there are still many unexplored areas, particularly in the Blue Economy sector through tourism, ports, oil and gas, and port and maritime transportation.
In addition Dr. Mwinyi invited the EU to help Zanzibar in these areas, especially in empowering women by increasing their competence.
As for Zanzibar, Ms. Laraujinha praised the country for its collaboration on EU-managed projects and promised President Mwinyi that they will continue to help his administration grow, especially in the areas of health, education, and the Blue Economy.
Ms. Laraujinha stated that the EU is impressed with the stability and peace in Zanzibar and reiterated its determination to assist in efforts to preserve this peace and guarantee that democracy continues on its path for the benefit of the nation's citizens.
