Sh53 billion to power households by 2017

Kenya Power company will spend Sh53.5 billion to connect 70 per cent of households and social amenities by June next year, Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter has said.

He said the funds will be used to buy transformers whose shortage is currently derailing the implementation of electric installation projects.

“We have Sh25.5 billion from World Bank, Sh15 billion from ADB and Sh10 billion from the government to buy transformers to speed up connectivity,” he said, adding that by 2017, all primary schools will be connected to power.

Keter, who spoke during a fundsdrive in aid of construction of a dormitory at Sirembe Secondary yesterday said there were 30,365 public facilities such as trading centers, schools and health centers that are to be electrified.

The CS, who was accompanied by MPs Jakoyo Midiwo (Gem), Nicholas Gumbo (Rarieda) and North Gem MCA Nicholas Were said the country’s rural electrification masterplan identified about 21,112 public facilities that need to be connected.

The government has so far released Sh24 million to install flood lights and street lights in major towns.
